Have you been watching the eaglets in Big Bear? I often have the live feed up on my computer. I have been fascinated every step of the way. I cheered when the eggs were laid, with the first site of the beaks poking out, when we could actually see the newly hatched chicks. I was so sad when the one eaglet died. I have watched with awe how the two majestic bald eagles have fed the babes, cared for them, protected them and kept them warm. The chicks are now standing up (and wobbling),and I am cheering them on!
I am not the only one watching this feed. There are literally millions of us watching. So, the question is why? What is it about these two eaglets and their parents that is so fascinating? Obviously, the answer is multi-layered. Bald eagles are truly majestic. Their numbers had been decimated. To see them making a comeback is almost miraculous. To see the adult eagles, with their vicious beaks, so gently feeding their young, sparks awe. To see how cruel and hopeful nature can be can inspire us to take more risks in our lives.
That is, of course, the real connection. How this beautiful bird family is impacting us. If these wobbly babies can stand on the edge of their nest (which is in a very high tree), maybe I can also take a risk? Maybe I can take a new (albeit wobbly) step towards something new? As I watch these powerful predators gently nurture their eaglets, maybe I can also come from a place of strength, but be gentle?
There is much to learn from nature. May we always allow ourselves to learn from it.
